Van 2001-2002 was Dr. R. (Roel) Fijn als ANIOS werkzaam in het Universitair Medisch Centrum Groningen en aan de RUG verbonden als universitair docent farmacotherapie en farmaceutische zorg. Daarna was hij als AIOS van 2002-2005 tijdens zijn specialisatie in het Westfries Gasthuis te Hoorn, het Medisch Centrum Alkmaar en het Rode Kruis Ziekenhuis te Beverwijk specifiek verantwoordelijk voor de radiofarmacologie en de klinische toxicologie. Sinds 2005 is hij in het Alrijne Ziekenhuis (voorheen Diaconessenhuis Leiden) als gevestigd (ziekenhuis)apotheker werkzaam in de poliklinische en klinische apotheken.
Hij is geregistreerd klinisch farmacoloog, epidemioloog, proefdierkundige, stralingskundige en biomedisch wetenschappelijk onderzoeker (good clinical practice (GCP) certificatie). Zijn farmacotherapeutische interesse- en expertisegebieden zijn dermatologie, allergologie, gynaecologie, urologie, oftalmologie en otorinolaryngologie, fytotherapie en radiofarmacologie. Specifieke persoonlijke interesse gaat uit naar onderzoek en vraagstukken op het gebied van farmacovigilantie, farmaco-ethiek en farmaco-antropologie.
